High Speed DWDM Provisioning – The Story of a World Record

  • Modern intelligent transport networks must be able to respond to unexpected demands for increased capacity in the terabit range. This webinar describes a provisioning "time trial" of 8Tb/s of capacity by Infinera and DANTE, over the GEANT pan-European backbone, that established a new world record officially recognized by the Guinness World Records organization.
  • Attendees will learn how coherent DWDM super-channels allow service providers to provision multi-terabit capacity in just a few minutes, with only one engineer performing the procedure.  We will discuss the importance of photonic integration in engineering these super-channels, and how the resulting implementation can be integrated with digital OTN switching and a Generalized MPLS Control Plane to create a scalable, converged and highly automated transport network architecture.

What You Will Learn/Seminar Objectives:
  • The importance of responsiveness for modern intelligent transport networks.
  • The role of "big data" in modern science collaboration.
  • What a super-channel is, how they are best engineered, and how they work to help service providers scale their capacity provisioning operations.
  • How super-channels form the foundation of an intelligent transport network architecture.
  • The ethos of a World Record, and how this record was created, and officially adjudicated.

  • Geoff Bennett, Director of Solutions and Technology, Infinera
  • Wolf Pueschner, Independent Consultant and Adjudicator
  • Michael Enrico, CTO, DANTE

Who Should Attend:
  • Photonics and Optoelectronics Professionals
  • Network Engineering, Architecture and Operations professionals
  • Anyone who wants to understand the significant benefits of super-channels

  • Intermediate to Advanced in DWDM technology. Attendees will benefit from an existing understanding of DWDM terminology, and the importance of modern coherent detection techniques.

High Speed DWDM Provisioning - The Story of a World Record

Geoff Bennett is the Director of Solutions & Technology for Infinera, a leading manufacturer of Intelligent Transport Network solutions.  He has over 20 years of experience in the data communications industry, including IP routing with Proteon and Wellfleet; ATM and MPLS experience with FORE Systems; and optical transmission and switching experience with Marconi, where he held the position of Distinguished Engineer in the CTO Office.  Geoff is a frequent conference speaker, and is the author of "Designing TCP/IP Internetworks," published by VNR.

Since 2000, Wolf Pueschner established and led the Global Network Factory (GNF) for Deutsche Telekom. The organization built and operates global voice and data networks in 25 countries, providing services to Deutsche Telekom Group and its customers. As the Executive VP of GNF, Wolf Pueschner led an organization for network design, network operations, sales support, business strategy and financial planning. GNF operates one of the largest wholesale minutes business in the world and provides the plan-build-run functions for Deutsche Telekom Peering Network (AS3320), ranked in the top 10 IP networks globally.  In 2010 Wolf retired and is now an independent consultant.

Michael Enrico became DANTE's Chief Technical Officer in 2012, after joining DANTE as senior network engineer in 2002.  His telecomm career started when he joined (what is now) BTexact Technologies in 1997, working on the study and development of innovative broadband access network architectures before moving to BT's wholesale broadband platform. In 2000 he joined a telecommunications startup as a network architect to design a novel platform to support wholesale secure broadband access and VPN services with a pan-European footprint.   Michael has a BSc and PhD in Physics from Lancaster University; his PhD work involved experimental studies on superfluid helium at ultralow temperatures.
